""As Fall begins, we are well into the beginning of the school year. As kids come together so does the sharing of germs. Bacteria on common surfaces can lead to coughs and sore throats. It is impossible to avoid being in a condensed area with illness present, but there are ways you can help protect your child. Here are five tips to get you started:

1. Proper Hand Washing

The act of putting soap in your hands and running them under water does not mean you have adequately washed your hands. The water needs to be warm and should take 20 seconds, or the hum of the ‘Happy Birthday’ song twice. When you wash your hands is also important. Remind children to wash their hands after the bathroom, sneezing, touching something dirty, and before eating.

2. Reduce Sharing

An important part of early education is teaching kids to share. While this is a practice that should be continued we need to be careful about items not to share between people. Things such as water bottles, hair brushes, and chapstick should stick with one owner.

3. Well Rounded Diet

A healthy immune system is more likely to work against germs in a classroom setting. Prepare your child for success by filling their diet with nutritious meals and snacks. Staying active also helps the body run most efficiently.

4. Vaccinations

Keeping up with vaccinations, particularly for the flu, is the most proactive step you can take. Instead of waiting for illness to strike, prepare for the what is inevitably going to be passed around.

5. Be Aware of Antibiotic Overuse

A virus is the most common cause of a cough or cold. Taking antibiotics when unneeded creates antibiotic-resistant bacteria and has rippling effects. Be patient with lingering sniffles and coughs; antibiotics will not cure them any faster.

Following these tips will give your child the highest chance of avoiding any unnecessary sick days. In the unfortunate event that your son or daughter does fall ill with a cold or sinus infection, it’s best to meet with a doctor.
