If you ever had an ear infection growing up, or felt your ears clog after spending the day out at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityofboise.org\/departments\/parks-and-recreation\/parks\/ann-morrison-park\/\">Ann Morrison Park<\/a>, that was probably due to fluid buildup in your middle ear. Often it wasn\u2019t serious and antibiotics or over-the-counter treatment resolved the problem.<\/p>\n<p>However certain middle ear conditions are more serious and can require surgery. Infections of the middle ear can cause pain, pressure, ear discharge, hearing loss and in some cases a ruptured eardrum.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Eustachian tube dysfunction.<\/strong> The eustachian tube balances the pressure between the middle ear and outside pressure. If it is damaged it can cause problems with hearing and damage the eardrum.<\/li>\n<li><strong><\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swient.com\/ear-pages\/cholesteatoma\/\"><strong>Cholesteatoma<\/strong><\/a> is a mass of skin cells in the middle ear. As the mass gradually increases in size, it destroys the middle ear\u2019s bones, causing hearing loss and infection.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tympanic membrane perforation.<\/strong> This refers to a hole in the eardrum. It can cause pain, drainage and hearing loss.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What Happens During Middle Ear Surgery<\/h2>\n<p>What happens during middle ear surgery often depends on what condition is being treated. There are four types of middle ear surgeries that include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Myringoplasty<\/strong> to repair a hole in the eardrum.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ossiculoplasty<\/strong> fixes problems with the bones in the middle ear.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tympanoplasty<\/strong> repairs a hole in the eardrum that won\u2019t close on its own.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swient.com\/ear-pages\/mastoid-surgery\/\"><strong>Mastoidectomy<\/strong> <\/a>involves drilling a hole in the mastoid bone and removing infected air cells.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Middle ear surgery is <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/9930539\/\">often performed<\/a> with an endoscope which allows the surgeon to visualize the entire tympanic membrane and ear canal without having to move the patient\u2019s head during the procedure. It also helps them see structures often hidden from traditional microscopes.<\/p>\n<h3>Recovery Time<\/h3>\n<p>Your experiences and recovery time will depend on multiple factors. You will be put under general anesthesia and may be prescribed pain medication or antibiotics afterward. Talk with your doctor about what to expect in terms of possible side effects after the surgery, and what behaviors you can and cannot engage in as you recover.
