Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Rhinoplasty literally means “nose shape.” This operation changes the existing shape, symmetry, or size of a patient’s nose. It can be done for cosmetic reasons—where the nose works perfectly well but an individual desires a different appearance—or when the nose’s shape, size or lack of symmetry impairs its ability to function.

Either reason is valid. However, insurance companies will not usually cover a cosmetic operation unless it restores the nose to a state preceding an injury, an illness of some other event or illness.

Rhinoplasty can be performed alone or with other nasal procedures such as:

  • Straightening the septum
  • Turbinate reduction
  • Sinus surgery
  • Polyp removal

While typically performed under a general anesthetic, the motivated patient can undergo rhinoplasty with local anesthesia supplemented with sedation. It is nearly always an outpatient procedure and done most economically in an outpatient facility rather than in a hospital operating room.
